In ECD 2 students will hone their professional skills and deepen their knowledge of child development. Students become the teacher and run an extended day program for the Young Fives students at Greendell where they plan and implement curriculum, employ behavior guidance strategies, and communicate with families. The Honors ECD 2 curriculum is aligned with Foothill's CHLD 89 (4 units, CSU transferrable) and CHLD 2 (4 unites, UC/CSU transferrable). This course runs at Paly during the normal school day. Students take the bus to Greendell approximately twice per week to work directly with young children.
First semester students will receive an overview of appropriate curriculum and environments for infants and young children. Students gain more hands on experience and responsibility as they run an 30-60 minutes of structured time with Young Five students twice per week. Students will examine the teacher's role in supporting development by using observation and assessment strategies and emphasizing the essential role of play. An overview of content areas will include but not be limited to: language and literacy, social and emotional learning, sensory learning, art and creativity, math and science.
Second semester students examine the developing child in a societal context focusing on interrelationship of family, school, and community, and emphasizing historical and sociocultural factors. The processes of socialization and identity development will be highlighted, showing the importance of respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families.
